NATIONAL MEETING WITH CONSUMERS ASSOCITAION PROTECTION

Under the supervision of the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission organized, on 18 June 2026, a national consultative meeting bringing together its representatives with representatives of national associations of consumer protection. The meeting was held at the Higher School of Hospitality and Catering of Algiers (ESHRA), in Algiers.


The proceedings of this meeting were opened by the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, in the presence of the President of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission, Mrs. Baya Chakird, the Director General of the Sonelgaz Group, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sonelgaz Distribution, the Director General of the National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalization of Energy Use, as well as executives from the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies and Sonelgaz, and representatives of national bodies and associations active in the field of consumer protection.


In his opening address, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies affirmed that this consultative event constitutes a space for dialogue, coordination and the exchange of views among the various actors and stakeholders in the sector, contributing to the improvement and modernization of electricity and gas distribution services and to meeting citizens’ expectations. This reflects the commitment of the public authorities to strengthening consumer protection and improving the performance of the public service, through an approach based on quality, efficiency and sustainability.


The Minister also highlighted the strategic importance of electricity and gas services for citizens and for the national economy, recalling the efforts made by the State to ensure regular energy supply to customers across the different regions of the country, in accordance with the highest quality standards. In this context, he emphasized that providing a modern and efficient public service is one of the fundamental pillars for implementing the ministry’s programme, by ensuring that energy reaches citizens wherever they are, with the required level of quality, while continuing to improve and upgrade the quality of the services provided.


For her part, the President of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission, Mrs. Baya Chakird, stated in her welcoming address that this meeting represents a space for exchanging views and raising concerns and expectations related to the development and improvement of the public electricity and gas service. She underlined that it strengthens coordination among the various actors and contributes to the optimal implementation of the legal and regulatory texts governing the sector. She also explained that this event aims to review the progress achieved by distribution services in improving service quality and ensuring its continuity, particularly through the development of digital services and electronic platforms intended for consumers. It also aims to shed light on issues related to energy management, the rationalization of energy consumption and the enhancement of energy efficiency, especially in view of the increasing demand for energy during the summer period.


The meeting featured several specialized presentations and interventions addressing various aspects related to consumer protection and the improvement of the public service. The Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission presented its main activities and initiatives aimed at strengthening consumer protection and improving the handling of consumers’ concerns. For its part, Sonelgaz Distribution delivered a presentation on the measures and services undertaken to improve the quality of service provided to customers, particularly through the expansion of service digitalization, the simplification of procedures and the strengthening of mechanisms for addressing citizens’ concerns, with a view to ensuring a more effective and seamless service. The National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalization of Energy Use also delivered an intervention dedicated to energy management and the rationalization of consumption, during which it presented the main current challenges and issues, as well as practical measures and actions likely to enhance energy efficiency and promote a culture of rational energy consumption.
At the close of the meeting, the President of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission, Mrs. Baya Chakird, called on all actors and partners to continue strengthening participatory and consultative work, and to intensify efforts aimed at developing the public electricity and gas service, in order to ensure a high-quality service that meets the expectations of Algerian citizens and keeps pace with the requirements of sustainable development.
