Ceremony for the New appointed President of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG)

The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mourad ADJJAL, presided over the official ceremony for Mrs. Baya CHEKIRED HAMMAT, the Newly Appointed President of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG), in succession to Mrs. Wassila BETATA ATIMENE, on Monday, 22 December 2025. The ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, in the presence of several presidents of commissions and representatives of the energy sector.

In his address delivered on this occasion, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies extended his congratulations to Mrs. CHEKIRED following her appointment as President of the CREG. He invited her to pursue and further strengthen efforts aimed at enhancing the performance of the Regulatory Authority, with a view to ensuring the rigorous, effective, and transparent implementation of the legislative and regulatory framework governing the electricity and gas sector. The Minister emphasized that this appointment fully aligns with the ongoing reform and modernization process underway in the energy sector, which seeks to consolidate institutional performance and promote the principles of good governance.

The Minister also highlighted the strategic role of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission as a key regulatory authority overseeing a vital sector closely linked to economic development, the quality of public service delivery, and the security of energy supply. In this regard, he recalled the progress achieved by the Commission since its establishment on 24 January 2005, particularly in terms of market regulation and oversight, the promotion of competition, and the reinforcement of transparency through the consolidation of the legal and regulatory framework governing the sector.

In the same context, the Minister expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Wassila BETATA ATIMENE for her dedication and the efforts undertaken during her tenure as President of the Commission. He further specified that the installation of Mrs. Baya CHEKIRED HAMMAT fully aligns with the new vision for the energy sector and reflects the implementation of the roadmap of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which aims to inject renewed momentum into the institutions under its authority, strengthen their dynamism, and enable them to carry out their regulatory and supervisory mandates with enhanced effectiveness.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Minister extended his best wishes for success to the new President of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission in the discharge of her duties, while reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the successful achievement of the objectives assigned to the Commission during the upcoming period.
